Παράγωγο ονομάζουμε μια λέξη που σχηματίζεται από μια άλλη,

με την προσθήκη μια συλλαβής στο τέλος [επίθημα],

ή στην αρχή [πρόθεμα].

Το παράγωγο είναι διαφορετικό μέρος του λόγου

από τη λέξη που προήλθε [θέμα / ρίζα].

Στο συγκεκριμένο παράδειγμα το παράγωγο είναι η λέξη disability.

Προέρχεται από τη λέξη able.

Το θέμα/ρίζα είναι "abil-".
